Removed: the managed frontend platform and the managed database, and with them “No staging, no release train, no feature flag service, no change review board.”
Outcome: the monthly bill went from “thousands of dollars to a fraction of that”. No cost figures are published.
Three engineers ran the same subtraction across a whole stack. Blue’s frontend ran on Render and its database on AWS Aurora until autoscaling failures and the bill made the decision for them; they moved the frontend, then the API, the background services and the production database onto dedicated servers, and the two managed services went with them.
Deployment became a five-line disco.json in the repository rather than a pipeline, and every firewall rule and MySQL setting an Ansible playbook. The companion post lists what is gone, not what was added.
