Where reduction worked

Sentry

Removed advertising cookies from its own site

A developer-tools company turned off advertising and tracking cookies on sentry.io, lost retargeting, and still had not put them back two years later.

Removed: advertising cookies and user tracking from sentry.io, in July 2023. Essential cookies that do not require consent stayed.

Outcome: display retargeting “died off pretty quickly”, about 50% of attribution data was salvaged and replaced with a self-reported survey, and the cookies were still gone two years later.

Sentry stripped advertising cookies and user tracking from sentry.io in July 2023. Two years later they still had not put the cookies back (27 April 2026).

Display retargeting “died off pretty quickly”; they salvaged about 50% of attribution data and replaced the rest with a self-reported “how did you hear about us” survey.

The weaker part they published too: paid targeting got worse, and they kept essential cookies that do not require consent. What they stopped collecting was the advertising and tracking data, not every cookie on the site.
